What is the difference between the Model 1560 and the Model 1562 ?

While both models are identical in operation and appearance they differ in the technology used internally to read and decode barcodes.

The Model 1560 employs a solid state C.C.D. circuit (Charge Coupled Device) to read the bar code symbol while the Model 1562 uses an oscillating laser mechanism to scan the bar code.

The development of the solid state C.C.D. circuit has allowed manufacturers to reduce the cost of production and this is reflected in the price of bar code readers using this reading technology. The difference in performance today of bar code readers using C.C.D. or Laser is marginal and usually only shows when the bar code readers are used in high ambient light conditions (eg: external daylight) where the Laser usually has a performance advantage. The Laser mechanism can also exhibit a greater depth of field in its scanning ability, in certain operational conditions this can be an advantage.

MS2200 ROV^TM Portable Laser Scanner from Microvision.

The simple to operate and affordable ROV Laser Bar Code Scanner caters for price sensitive data collection applications in enterprise, government and small to medium size businesses.

Designed for use in a variety of commercial, retail or industrial applications, the MS2200 series can be supplied with RS232 serial I/F cables, USB HID I/F cables or USB HID Docking Station. The MS2200 can also be supplied with Protective Santoprene® Boot for safe operation in a variety of environments. 

When used remotely the ROV MS2200 is powered by 3 AAA Alkaline or 3 AAA NiMh rechargeable cells (not included), this portable bar code scanner can be easily taken to where the stock or asset data needs to be processed. The in-built 64Kb of non-volatile memory can store up to 4000 UPC-A size or a similar quantity of average length asset or library bar codes for downloading to the host computer when required. The ROV MS2200 does not require any additional wedge software to be installed for downloading basic item bar code data to library automation systems like Bookmark, simply reconnect to the USB HID cable supplied and scan the download command bar code provided.

In addition to its ability to store asset data the MS2200 ROV also has a "TimeStamp" option incorporated within, this very useful feature greatly enhances the ROV's versatility and allows the ROV to be used for many applications that require "Time" and "Date" recording such as Time and Attendance and Production Line Time and Motion studies. Accessing this feature requires additional software that is specifically designed to communicate with the ROV to extract this detail. The standard MS2200 ROV can be interfaced/connected to the host computer either via an RS232 serial cable or via a USB cable. The Optional Microvision ROV USB cable can be configured to operate in 2 ways, VCOM (Virtual COM Serial) or HID (Human Interface Device). By far the easiest and recommended method of connection is the USB HID mode where the USB cable is seen as a virtual keyboard by Mac or Windows XP Svc Pack 2 or greater and installation is handled automatically by the operating system.

When the MS2200 ROV is interfaced to the host PC via RS232 serial or USB in VCOM mode it is necessary to download additional support software. In the case of interfacing with USB as VCOM it is necessary to install a USB driver, Microvision also make available at no cost a Wedge software utility for both RS232 and USB VCOM modes that takes the serially captured bar code data and sends it to the keyboard buffer to be processed by the recipient application.

The Microvision ROV Wedge Utility can also be used with the ROV MS2200-BT bluetooth model to capture bar code data to be forwarded on to the recipient application.

We have been prompted to bring to the attention of users of the new generation of cordless CCD bar code readers a matter of importance in the method of usage. Some operators of long range or extended distance scanners sometimes misunderstand the operational requirements of these bar code readers and attempt to read bar codes by positioning the bar code reader much too close to the bar code and in doing so incorrectly assume the unit is malfunctioning because it appears to not read the bar code. The optics in these new generation CCD scanners like the Cipher 1166 series are now more sophisticated and are designed to read the bar code at a greater depth of field than the standard tethered units. The correct manner of operating an extended distance bar code reader is to hold the unit at a distance about 15 Cm away from and at an angle of approx 15 - 20 degrees from the vertical of the bar code being scanned, press the trigger and smoothly bring the scanner in towards the bar code until a good read signal is achieved. Once this technique is understood it usually becomes second nature to the operator and satisfactory scanning can be undertaken very quickly.
